Newquay Hornets 38 Kingsbridge u15s 25

It was a tale of two halves, sadly the sort of halves you get when you share a bar of chocolate with a rival. Your half is never quite as good. And so it was that Kingsbridge’s 18 unanswered first half points were not as good as Newquay’s six second half tries.

From the off, Jack Fergusson and Ben King scrapped for the ball and successfully forced turnover at ruck time. With Luke Musgrave running hard, the trio forced two penalties which Tom Putt skilfully sent soaring between the posts for an early lead.

Angus Johnstone and Jamie Ogglesby both tackled and chased kicks to hinder the ever present threat of Newquay’s key player, Harrison Culley. Fred Buckle ran well from the base of his dominant scrum but soon had to move to inside centre after Matty Allen left the pitch through injury. Buckle’s quick hands led to a try for George Rivas after pressure from Fynn McCoy and Jack Fergusson led to a turnover and a Kingsbridge counter attack.

Ryan Harris joined the frey and caught the ensuing kick off, returning it with a strong run into the opposition half. Joe Banfield scored his try by solo effort after catching a 22 metre drop kick and sprinting to the corner.

Scrums went the way of Kingsbridge’s pack for most of the game with the blue eight driving Newquay off their own ball when Newquay were awarded a scrum under Kingsbridge’s posts. Myles Fowler worked hard at loose head prop, continuing his run of good form. He was ably supported by Toby Woods, Greg Luckhurst, Pete Sumner, Luke Musgrave and Dan Jarvis.

Half time came with Kings 18 points to the good. Wind and a second half fightback went the way of Newquay. Luke Musgrave bagged a late try with a typical surging run of 30 metres sending defenders crashing and fleeing. Kings paid a heavy price for not clearing their line under pressure and for trying to play rugby in their own 22 though, to their immense credit, they kept battling to the final whistle and nearly overturned the deficit.
