Kingsbridge welcomed Withycombe U10’s to High House on a sunny Sunday morning. With both teams able to field both sides the respective A teams played first. As Withycombe were looking for revenge for the semi-final defeat in the Devon Cup last season they were certainly pumped up for the game. The early exchanges saw Kingsbridge getting the better of the opposition with a well worked try for Toby Baldry in the corner, but Withycombe then turned on the pressure and very much took control. Kingsbridge kept losing the ball in contact and getting turned over too easily with the Withycombe forwards coming up with the ball each time after contact working their number 7 over for a try. Halftime passed and right from the start Kingsbridge got the ball out down the line through Ivor then Joss and a weaving strong run from Toby Baldry saw him go over for his second try. This stirred Withycombe and from a maul the ball was ripped from the Kingsbridge forwards and was worked along the backs for Withy to bring the scores level. Although some stout defence from Kingsbridge, the team never really got their hands on the ball and the visitors worked themselves over for another try proving to be the winner. A close match where Kingsbridge learnt that ball retention is key. Final score Kingsbridge 10 – 15 Withycombe
The second match was as close as the first with Kingsbridge nicking victory right at the end. The boys started brightly and within minutes Tom Newman broke through a couple of tackles to score a great individual try. The Kingsbridge forwards were more dominant in the scrum and ruck and after a lengthy play working their way up field, Sam Brizio managed to reach over and touch down just before the ball knocked forward putting Kingsbridge two up. Halftime saw Withycombe start the 2nd half with more aggression with 2 quick tries right after the break. After some great work by Ryland and Harrison in the forwards stopping the WIthcombe lads, the ball popped out and Tom Newman picked up superbly to run in his second. Withy then replied with another well worked try to setup a tense last couple of minutes. With a ruck formed and Jack Quick popping the ball out to the backs, Freddie Ford managed to squeeze past a defender or two before getting the ball to Tom who raced into the corner for the winning score.
