Kingsbridge RFC u15 34 – 10 Barnstaple RFC
New shirts? Suits you sir! It suited Kingsbridge alright as their Herring Shoes and Tally Ho! sponsored shirts saw daylight for the first time at High House. Barnstaple could only admire the figure hugging jerseys at close quarters as they were bludgeoned by the blue front five of Luckhurst, Sumner, Fowler, Musgrave and Jarvis. Squeezing themselves into the new kit, the blue five held in their stomachs, puffed out their chests and exhaled on impact. Barnstaple were blown away. The sleeker figures of King, Buckle and Fergusson slipped through the Barum rucks to deny their opponents ball time and time again.
George Rivas scored with his first touch of the game, darting into the corner for a try after a Fergusson steal set up crash ball by Matty Allen. A superb touchline conversion by Tom Putt further shocked the traditionally strong visiotrs. Luke Musgrave set up a Michael Carson try after stealing opposition lineout ball that his forwards took up the middle time after time before Fynn McCoy set the backs free. Tom Putt chased a McCoy kick in the next play and, despite interference from the defender, beat his man to the touchdown. No TMO was needed and there was no point going upstairs. Chris Lee’s hamstrings made sure he was up with play to see Putt’s downward pressure in a calm, competent refereeing display. Seb Ansley played his normal reassuring game at full back to get Kings out of trouble when Barum threatened the home try line.
The second half got off to a flyer with Carson touching down in the corner again after another Fergusson steal, power ruck by the forwards and link play by King. Barnstaple fought back hard and ran everything in a great display of three quarter running. The blue back line was equal to this in defence aswelll as attack. Musgrave turned the flow of play with a trademark pick up, smash through and touch down. He and Carson have scored a try in every game they have played this season. Fergusson finished the game off with a try, emerging from the bottom of a pile of bodies with the ball under his chest and over the try line.
The injured and non selected Kingsbridge players from this under 15 team who watched their team mates from the sidelines shows the strength in depth and team spirit in this squad of talented players coached by Jason Putt.
The team now look forward to their home fixture in Round One of the Devon Cup against Sidmouth with confidence.
