WITHYCOMBE 7 points KINGSBRIDGE 45
Kingsbridge made it 15 league wins from 16 starts this season as they duly completed the league double over bottom club Withycombe on Saturday in this rather one sided encounter.
Withycombe have endured a torrid couple of seasons in this league and, now 14 points adrift at the bottom of the table, have no real chance of avoiding the drop to the Devon and Cornwall League. However playing teams at the bottom of the table can sometimes prove more difficult than teams in mid table and the Blue and Whites had to ensure that this match did not become a potential stumbling block.
Kingsbridge certainly started the stronger and were in front as early as the fourth minute when a break from centre Ben Glover saw secure ruck ball set up and a delightful chip over the home back line from fly half Greg Newman saw winger Jack Davey race onto race into score. Newman converted for a 0-7 lead. Despite having the majority of possession Kingsbridge had to wait until the end of the first quarter before they could increase their lead. From a five metre line out a strong catch and drive saw the pack drive hooker and Captain Jason Putt over the line for a 0-12 lead.
On the half hour mark, much against the earlier run of play, Kingsbridge found themselves stuck deep in their own twenty-two. With the home pack attacking the Kingsbridge line. A quick succession of penalties in the scrum and in mid field saw the referee award a penalty try to the hosts. The conversion in front of the posts saw the scoreline reduced to 7-12 with half time fast approaching. Kingsbridge did however have time to score their third try of the half shortly before the interval. A series of forward drives in the Withycombe twenty-two saw the ball fed out to flanker Ted Lee who managed to squeeze into the corner to touch down and take the half time score to 7-17.
The second half undoubtedly belonged to Kingsbridge as they scored four further converted tries. The overall score would probably have been much higher had Kingsbridge not given away a worrying amount of needless penalties. The first two tries of the half went to number eight Matt Hamilton, the first from a quickly taken tap penalty and the second following a strong break for the line from centre Glover. Both tries were converted by Newman
In the final five minutes of the game Kingsbridge scored two further tries as the hosts wilted. A knock on near half way from the home team saw centre Iain Johnson swoop to gather the loose ball and he fed outside to replacement winger Jake Chapman who raced in along the touchline before rounding behind the posts to touch down. Once again Newman was on target with the conversion.
The final try was probably the teams most satisfying as a move straight from the training ground saw the hosts totally opened up. A five metre line out saw the ball switched quickly to fly half Newman and he found winger Matt Gibbens on the angled drift and he was able to race straight through to score the final, under the posts, untouched by a Withycombe defender. Newman converted again to complete the scoring.
This weekend sees Kingsbridge travel to face Okehampton in a rearranged WCW League match whilst the A XV will be entertaining Newton Abbot II’s in a friendly at High House at 2.30pm. The Colts XV travel to face Torquay in the Colts Merit Table.
