KINGSBRIDGE 50 points NEWQUAY 7

It was a matter of tries, tries and more tries for the three senior Kingsbridge teams on Saturday as they all ran out victors in massive one sided games.

Kingsbridge duly completed the double over their Cornish visitors by following up their 23-0 victory in Newquay, back in October, with this seven try drubbing at High House on Saturday.

This 17th win in 19 matches sees the Blue and Whites keep in touch with leaders Camborne and joint second placed team Wadebridge (who are ahead of Kingsbridge on points difference only). Kings travel to face Wadebridge on Saturday in a match that is likely to have a massive bearing on the final outcome of this long league season.

Kingsbridge started very strongly on Saturday and two fine breaks from full back Jake Chapman saw the Newquay defence stretched early on. Then in the fourth minutes fly half Greg Newman opened the scoring when he was on target with his first attempt at goal. Ten minutes later and the home side were 10-0 ahead courtesy of a well worked try the ripped open the Newquay defence. A miss move saw fly half Newman release centre Jack Cope who broke to the Newquay twenty-two before offloading inside to fellow centre Ben Glover to race in to touch down.

Against the run of play the visitors then scored a converted try of their own during a rare foray into the Kingsbridge half. That spurred the home team on and they scored two further unanswered tries before the interval. The first saw Newman dummy his way over under the posts to score following excellent pressure from the forwards deep in the Newquay half. The simple conversion took Kingsbridge 17-7 ahead.

Scrum half Tristan Couch was next on the score sheet when he went over from close range following good build up work from flanker Andrew Horton and centre Glover. Newman converted again for a 24-7 half time lead.

Kingsbridge extended their lead further after ten minutes of the second half when prop Mike Powell was the man with the touchdown following a catch and drive move from the forwards saw try number four scored wide out. Again Newman was on target with the conversion to take Kingsbridge 31-7 ahead.

There was a period of quiet soon after this as Kingsbridge were frustrated by the visitors. However they soon made up for this as they then hit Newquay with three tries five minutes to batter the visitors into submission. Replacement wing Ashley Treeby was released along the touchline from just inside the Newquay half to score in the corner with virtually his first touch of the ball to make it 36-7 before breaks from Couch and winger Jack Davey saw Newman cross over for his second try of the match. The conversion of his own score took Kingsbridge well clear at 43-7.

Almost immediately from the restart breaks from locks Andy Rossiter and Man Of The Match Henry Lewin-Titt saw scrum half Couch cross over for his second of the afternoon. Newman’s sixth successful conversion brought up the teams half century of points and took Newman’s tally for the match to 25.

This Saturday sees Kingsbridge travel to face fellow promotion chasers Wadebridge in what is likely to be one of their toughest challenges of the season. Devon Two Merit Table leaders Kingsbridge A XV entertain second placed Tavistock II’s at High House at 2.30pm whilst the Colts entertain Brixham Colts in the Devon Colts Merit Table on the Longfield Pitch at 2.00pm.
