Big away win for superb Axv
By KRFC Webteam: Wednesday, 24th February 2010

OPM 2nds 0pts Kingsbridge Axv 73 pts

This merit table match started in a scrappy fashion as both sides had difficulty settling down on a very heavy pitch. It was Kings though who ulimatley had the class to overcome the conditions and come away very convincing winners. Kings supplied the home team with 2 players from the start and credit must go to OPMs for not crying off as some teams would have especially given the A teams far superiour position in the table. The first Kings score came from an excellent move which saw the ball shifted out through the line where the awaiting skipper John Butcher was on hand to slip it to Tom Jacobs who went over under the post. From the restart kings attacked but it was very scrappy. Order soon restored though and the safe hands of Ben Newman and the bulldozing centre Luke Williamson saw the ball out to Jacobs who jinked his way over for his second score. From the resulting start 2nd row Shaun Woodland brilliantly rescued the ball which was then fed through the backs to winger James Cullen who went over. OPMs then attacked and but for a crunching Williamson tackle might have scored, the resulting possession went out to centre Neil Lethbridge who broke through for his first try of a personal haul of four. Then the highlight of the match Shaun Woodland took the ball from brother Blair at the lineout and Simon Pope charged through like a raging bull when Dan Smaridge cleared up and shifted the ball to John Baker who who then rather fortunatley tripped on his laces and fell over the line to score. Lethbridge finished the scoring for the half with his second with Kings going in 40 pts in credit. OPMs started the second half in great spirits but it was not long before kings restarted the scoring with Lethbridge going over for his hatrick and again for his fourth. Kings again attacked with the terrier like Ali Hamilton but he was denied by a crunching tackle from Shaun Woodland who pulled on an OPM shirt for the second half. OPMs then attacked and could have scored but indicipline cost them a penalty to kings agonisingly close to the line but the quick thinking Hamilton took a short tap and after running the length of the pitch went over for his score. The kings pack commanded throughout where front row Jack Taylor, Blair Woodland and Steve Shute excelled as did replacement prop Richie Rossiter when he came on for Shute, indeed a fine ball from Woodland to Ben Newman allowed him to dodge a tackle or two and go over for kings. The final score came from a by now chugging Dan Smarridge who put in a lethargic run to go over. Fly Half Newman added nine conversions throughout the match before the referee blew up 10 minutes early.
