WADEBRIDGE 29 points KINGSBRIDGE 10
Kingsbridge’s promotion chances were dealt a severe blow by second place Wadebridge on Saturday. The game, postponed from before Christmas due to frost, was played on a glue like surface and, unfortunately for the visitors, the home side has the power and pace throughout their team to adapt better to it. Their 29 – 10 victory gives them a two point advantage on the league although Kingsbridge do still have a game in hand.
The blue and whites were under pressure straight from the kick off with the home side threatening the Kingsbridge line and it wasn’t long before the Wadebridge centre scythed through some poor defending to score out wide. A few minutes later Wadebridge scored again as their ability to spread the ball out wide quickly led to a try under the posts by their fly half, which he converted himself. Kingsbridge were really up against it and only some desperate covering kept the home side from scoring again.
Just when it looked like Wadebridge would go into half time 12 – 0 up an over elaborate move allowed centre Jack Cope to intercept a wild pass and power in from the half way line for a try under the posts, which Greg Newman had no difficulty in converting.
The second half started identically to the first and a penalty for the home side stretched their lead to 15 – 7. Greg Newman replied for Kingsbridge with a fine kick and the visitors were still in the game at 15 – 10.
Usually at this stage Kingsbridge’s fitness allows them to start to dictate the game but this time the boot was on the other foot and Wadebridge started to control the game more and more. The unfortunate sin-binning of Mike Powell at this time left Kingsbridge a man short and Wadebridge made this pay with a well worked try by their full back. This was converted to take their lead to 22 – 10.
Kingsbridge kept trying to play running rugby and made several forays into the Wadebridge half but just did not have the ability to break through. With just a five minutes to go they were shown how to score when home side’s centre cut through to score his second try and with the conversion a formality the home side ran out worthy winners at 29 – 10.
A needless show of petulance by Jake Chapman earned him his second yellow card in three weeks, something a player of his undoubted talent would do well to avoid in future. These sorts of games are hard enough but to play with only fourteen men makes it almost impossible.
On the day Kingsbridge had to admit that they had been beaten by the better side but they can take great credit for their refusal to give in, they never stopped trying and while it is difficult to pick out individuals who gave most to the cause, youngsters Ted Lee and Henry Lewin-Titt do deserve recognition for the way they played.
Saturday’s trip to North Petherton will not be easy but hopefully the blue and whites can get back to winning ways and keep the pressure on Camborne and Wadebridge at the top of the table.
