Torquay U14’s 5 – Kingsbridge U14’s 74
Kingsbridge arrived in Torquay with 17 players and renewed energy from notable performances at last Sunday’s J P Morgan’s 7’s festival at Exeter Chiefs. Within 5 minutes of the opening whistle, an intelligent box kick from Beattie saw the game move inside the Torquay 22. A move off the ruck that followed Beattie’s saw Pearsall denied an opening try as a result of prior a knock on. Sadly Beattie was injured in this ruck and had to retire from the game. Tunley opened the score sheet a few minutes later with the first of his four tries. Torquay had no response to King’s pace, power and ferocity of attack. Sutton newly arrived at 9, linked well with Dorey at 10 who gave quick ball out wide. King’s persistently exploited the Torquay defence creating overlaps that released Tunley and Shortman. King’s forwards worked tirelessly throughout the game to secure good ball for the backs. Particular praise goes to props George Jones and Marvin Jones. The far stronger and physically larger Torquay pack found themselves in all sorts of difficulty as successive balls were stolen. Marvin Jones, Wotton, Dryburgh, Mearns, Pearsall and Banfield caused continuous disruption and cleaned up lots of loose ball. Jones was eventually rewarded with his own try. Kings secured three more tries in the first half through Rayworth, Perez-Garcia and Tunley. Triggol replaced Shortman in the second half, taking some fine catches and again causing problems for the Torquay defence. King’s kept up the pressure, scoring a further seven tries through Mearns, Swash, Tunley, Wotton, Banfield, Rayworth and Tunley. Swash’s boot added a further 14 points despite the windy conditions. This was 15 man team rugby at its best. No tries came from solo performances; they were all secured from hard work, quick hands and intelligent rugby. Man of the Match was James Warner for his strong performance in only his second full game. Thanks to Fred and James Baker for coming along to support.
