Kingsbridge U12’s travelled early on Sunday morning to Exeter Chief’s Sandy Park for the Land rover Cup competition. Teams from all over the South West were competing and Kingsbridge were drawn in a tough pool consisting of Exmouth, Wellington and Redruth.
The first match against Exmouth started well and Kingsbridge camped on the Exmouth line for most of the 7 minute first half. In the second half Exmouth’s desperate defending lead to Kingsbridge being awarded a penalty from which Max Howard darted through the defence and scored. Kingsbridge then let their guard down and Exmouth took advantage to level the score. Kingsbridge took the ball back to the Exmouth line but despite Exmouth being warned about consistent high tackles Kingsbridge did not manage to score again and the match ended in a disappointing draw.
The second game saw Kingsbridge up against a well organised Wellington side. Kingsbridge tackled well but lacked aggression and spark and were unable to prevent Wellington passing the ball out to the wing who scored in the corner after four minutes. The second half saw more of the same and Kingsbridge allowed Wellington to score again and were out classed by a better team on the day.
The final match of the pool was against Redruth and unfortunately Kings were unable to reproduce any of the outstanding performance that they had achieved the week before against Topsham. The forwards worked hard rucking and mauling but the ball was often lost due to bad technical execution and again, lack of aggression. Redruth scored just before the half time whistle. Kingsbridge never gave up and defended well in the second half but were unable to cross the Redruth line for a draw.
Kings need to put this disappointing performance behind them and go forward as an individual team not a team of individuals.
