Topsham U14s 10

After last week’s defeat by Devonport, a focussed and determined Kingsbridge team turned out to face Topsham last Sunday. It was a tough battle from the whistle, characterised by a series of injury stoppages that made it difficult for either side to establish any flow to their game. With Billy Oram and Jack Banfield sustaining neck and arm injuries that took them to Torbay Hospital and a catalogue of other injuries during the game, King’s forward line up was an ever-changing feast involving many boys playing out of their normal positions. George Jones, Marvin Jones, Harvey Dryburgh, Jack Foale, William Foale Tom Wotton, James Pearsall, Keanu Mearns and Fred Matthews all deserve special mention for holding the pack together – and managing to maintain its set piece dominance. Thankfully both hospitalised boys are now on the mend after being diagnosed with ligament damage.

From the start, Kings were pinned down in their own 22 for 20 minutes and although they defended impressively with some great tackling from Cal Tunley and Harrie Shortman, eventually conceded seven points as the visitor’s pressure took its toll. By half time the difference was ten points. In the second period, the tables were turned as Kings settled into their stride and began to move the ball around more. With two tries disallowed, Kings turned up the heat and their superior fitness helped open up opportunities for Isaac Rayworth, Jack West and Marvin Jones to score. Leo swash added two more points for converting. This was a very encouraging result against one of the strongest teams in Devon and is a great reflection on the efforts of every member of the squad.
