Withycombe U14’s 0 – Kingsbridge U14’s 91
Kingsbridge made the journey back up the A38 on Sunday morning following their previous day out at the Exeter Chief’s Super Saturday. Having had watched an inspirational display by Chiefs and spending two hours being coached by Chiefs’ players the boys arrived in Withycombe for their first encounter with the club.
Within 5 minutes of the opening whistle, King’s formed an impressive running line and distributed the ball wide to allow Rayworth to score. This quick ball game managed by Sutton at 9 and Dorey at 10 dominated for the next 20 minutes. Whenever Kings’ won the ball they exploited their speed and pace out wide. Perez-Garcia shone all game as he was finally allowed some space in his new position of outside centre, scoring three times. Beattie, making a return from injury, also scored three times from the wing. All the tries came from clever off-loads, passing and re-cycling of the ball. The Kingsbridge pack, still missing several experienced players, dominated every line out and scrum, winning their own ball and Withycombe’s. The forwards were quick to support in the breakdown and whilst they didn’t see much of the ball themselves they did provide quality service. The half ended with King’s 49 points ahead.
The second half continued at the request of Withycombe to allow all of their 26 players a chance to play. This was a slightly less well organised half for King’s but they still ran in a further six tries Rayworth and Tunley each bring there tally’s to three a piece and Marvin Jones smash through for one more. Beattie swapped for King’s only substitute Shortman at half time. Shortman once again showed his pace storming down the wing but unfortunately after having his try disallowed, had to leave the pitch when he received an injury after accidentally clashing with one his own teammates. Swash swapped his 15 shirt with Sutton during this half and really pressed his application to be considered for the Scrum Half position. The team now has three boys, who are more than capable of playing in this crucial position and the progress of Beattie, Sutton and Swash to take on the maturity of this role will be watched with interest as the season progresses.
Swash’s boot converted every try and he is to be commended on a fine kicking display from at times difficult angles. Man of the Match was Sam Burgess for his strong performance in his first full game in a new position; he put in a fearless display and worked hard all game. Thanks to Fred for coming along to support.
