Kingsbridge RFC u15 29 Plymstock Albion Oaks 7

Kingsbridge made it 3 wins from 3 games with a comprehensive away win at Plymstock. Wind, soft ground, handling errors and more whistle blowing from the referee than a kettle factory on testing day, all conspired to make the entire game stop start.

This meant scrum after scrum which suited front rowers Pete Sumner, Myles Fowler, Stu Harris,Toby Woods and Liam Edgecombe. Woods made his debut at hooker for KRFC and was notable for his skilfull hooking and lineout throws.

Luke Musgrave broke the deadlock after Michael Carson caught a Plymstock clearance kick and ran it back. The blue back row of Ben King, Freddie Buckle and Jack Fergusson won the ball at the ensuing ruck for the blond giant to rampage through the Plymstock defence, knocking defenders aside like bowling pins.

You may have seen James Hook’s kick sail through the World Cup posts in New Zealand only for it not to be given as a score. Well Tom Putt seemingly slotted over his conversion kick in similar style. Eagle eyed touch judge Mike Jarvis held his flag high whilst his counterpart waved his flag low. With no impartial TMO to ‘go upstairs’ to, the kick was not given. Whilst there were no weeping Welshmen on this occasion, Jarvis looked visibly shaken.

Musgrave scored the second of his brace of tries from a number 8 pick up at the base of an advancing blue scrum 10 metres out from the try line. There was no stopping Luke as he strode like a mighty colossus to send Kings into the break 10 points ahead. Team Physio Jackie Buckle, energised by triple fried chips, had little to do but distribute the much needed half time Haribos.

The second half saw some positional changes and a corresponding change in play that set free the talent that is Michael Carson. Tom Putt was first to score. He took the ball into contact on first phase play but offloaded, Sonny Bill Williams style, to the mercurial Freddie Buckle who kept the move alive via Jinking Joe Banfield. Buckle did well to keep pace and was on hand to catch Joe’s offload and quickly ship the ball to Putt for a touch down.

Kings then discovered a powerful counter rucking game with Dan Jarvis and Pete Sumner notable for their contribution. The away crowd roared as the blue forwards discovered the ability to converge at speed on seemingly lost rucks to win turnover ball. Michael Carson ran in a try of individual brilliance aswell as one courtesy of the tremendous link play of Ben King. Two more conversions and a late consolation try for Plymstock left the final score 7 – 29. Kings have been strengthened by recent recruits to the side, skilfully blended in by coach Jason Putt. The team now take a break before making the trip to Newquay for a tough fixture.
